Optical Matrix - Overview
Optical switching dramatically enhances optical networks and systems, and Lynx offers advanced switching solutions for multiple applications. Lynx has developed solutions that are ideal for specific applications, such as optical protection. These solutions are available in a rich variety of options and configurations.

For customers that prefer to build their own solution, Lynx offers a variety of generic switching building blocks and tools. These modules are based on the highly reliable and flexible PLC switching technology.

Generally speaking, optical matrix products support optical matrix switching in the form of k*(NxM), where k denotes that there is an array of k matrix elements of NxM ports. Additional optional functionalities include VOA on outputs, (programmable split) multicasting, bi-directional connections and more.
Lynx has three types of Optical Matrix offerings:
  • Optical Matrix Systems. These are members of the LightLEADER small system family, which provide switching capabilities in a 1U 19” managed box. The system interface has a defined operational protocol that enables the user’s system to run its application and to use the protocol to operate switching functionalities. These systems also feature GUI-based management and user-friendly remote management interface to operate switching functionality.
  • Optical Matrix Subsystems. These are high-level modules that usually come as an optical module and a control board. The control board holds the software to operate the optical module, and offers a rich variety of interfaces to system control buses. They can be integrated into the customer’s system and provide the optical switching capabilities needed there. These subsystems enable operations such as built-in power management including multicasting, etc.
  • Optical Modules. Modules are usually operated via simpler interfaces than subsystems or systems, and are designed for basic optical operations. The following example illustrates the difference between modules and subsystems: A module of a 4x4 optical matrix will come as one unit with TTL or RS232 interface and will enable any point-to-point switching configuration in the 4x4 matrix. A 4x4 matrix subsystem might come in an array of 2 or more 4x4 matrices within an optical module and an additional control board. The interfaces will include parallel bus and SPI interfaces and the functionality will include the 4x4 point-to-point connections as in the module case, but there will also be weighted multicasting connections (one-to-many) as well as built-in VOA at each output.
