Wavelength Services Protection

Lynx offers a variety of wavelength services protection products, mostly aimed at DWDM networks. Wavelength services protection system employs two redundant optical channels (including transponder, fiber, amplifiers, regenerators, etc.) between the two link ends, ensuring that in case of failure, (e.g. transponder failure or fiber cut) traffic will be routed via the functional channel. The default optical channel/path is also called the ‘working channel’, and the redundant optical channel/path is called the ‘protection channel’.
Many carriers and businesses using DWDM assume that their traffic is protected by built-in redundancy within the DWDM network elements or by their Sonet/SDH services. This is not always the case. Sonet/SDH is not a practical protection solution for high-rate services (such as OC192), and DWDM networks’ built-in redundancy is not normally sufficient. In fact, DWDM networks usually provide adequate end-to-end protection only when they are installed at the customer’s premises and use fully diverse paths. Even in such cases, the DWDM terminal is a single point of failure with relatively low reliability. Lynx wavelength services protection systems address the following key issues usually required in this environment:

Lynx wavelength services protection systems address the following key issues usually required in this environment:
- End-to-end protection of lambda and sub-lambda very high rate optical clients
- High reliability
- Fast protection switching
- Continuous monitoring of both working channels and protection channels
- Traffic carry-over during power failure (both latching or non-latching versions are available)
- Unidirectional or bidirectional operations (bidirectional operation may be required if there are large latency differences between the working and protection channels).
- Cost and space savings through a high port count (high density)
Lynx’s solutions provide a variety of protection methods to address any specific application in the most cost effective way. These include:
- 1+1 protection for unidirectional protection operations (single-ended)
- 1+1 protection for bi-directional protection operations (dual-ended)
- 1:1 protection + support of extra traffic (better utilization of redundancy)
- 1:4 (also called 4+1): one backup channel protects 4 working channels. Mainly used when all wavelengths are transported in a single fiber and the main requirement is to protect the transponders at the link ends.
Some Lynx channel protection products have unique capabilities based on new Lynx technology. These include:
- 1+1 bi-directional protection
- 1:1 protection + support for extra traffic
- LynxSense™ - Continuous testing of all of switch paths without interfering with traffic, to make sure ‘it will switch’
