Lynx offers a variety of fiber protection products, aimed mostly at metro/access fiber networks. A fiber protection system employs two redundant fibers between the two link ends to ensure that if one of them fails, (e.g. cut during construction work), the traffic is routed via the functional one. The default fiber is called ‘working fiber’ and the redundant fiber is denoted ‘protection fiber’.
Lynx’s fiber protection systems offer important benefits:
Lynx’s fiber protection systems offer important benefits:
- Low cost
- Low end-to-end insertion loss
- High reliability
- Fast protection switchover
- Continuous monitoring of both working and protection fibers
- Traffic carry-over during power failure (both latching and non-latching versions are available)
- In-band management, eliminating the need for an extra management link
- Cost and space savings, through a high port count (high density)
Lynx solutions provide a variety of protection methods, meeting the requirements of any specific application in the most cost-effective way. Protection methods include:
- 1+1 protection (switchover of only the failed fiber or the entire fiber pair)
- 1:1 protection (for minimal loss and bi-directional operation over fiber-pair or over single WDM fiber).
- 1:1 protection + support of extra traffic (better utilization of redundancy)
- 1:4 protection (also called 4+1). One backup fiber protects 4 working fibers. Mainly used when all fibers have diverse routing (so that a fiber cut or other such failure influences only one working fiber at a time).
Some Lynx fiber protection products have unique capabilities based on new Lynx technology. These include:
- 1+1 bi-directional protection over a fiber-pair
- In-band management with no additional laser or wavelength
- 1+1 protection with programmable splitting ratio. This allows optimal insertion loss by compensating for significant differences in the loss of the working and protection fibers.
- 1:1 protection where the inactive fiber is monitored without additional laser or wavelength.
