Equipment Protection
Lynx offers a variety of advanced equipment protection products. In DWDM links cases where there are no redundant DWDM channels, the terminal transponders and CPE line cards can be protected locally by using equipment protection systems. Protection schemes can be 1:1, requiring a spare for each protected card, or 1:n (n+1), where a single spare protects n operational cards.
Access networks can benefit from equipment protection as well. In many cases a single link connects the enterprise to the Central Office, and adding a second link is prohibitively expensive. Yet protection is essential, since the failure of a single
router line card causes the enterprise to lose connectivity entirely. Lynx offers several cost-effective solutions for such networks, including local 1:1 and 1:4 equipment protection. Using one protection line card to protect four working line cards reduces space requirements and protection costs.
Many equipment protection solutions require interaction between the protection system and the protected equipment. In the case of local 1:n transponder protection, for example, the spare transponder needs to assume the wavelength of the failed transponder. Wavelength configuration of the backup transponder is the responsibility of the protection system. When protecting router line-cards, the protection system needs to configure the router during switchover, to route traffic through the backup card. The interface between the protection system and the protected router needs to be customized for each router vendor. Lynx’ products are interoperable with several key routers and can be customized to interface with additional models.

Lynx equipment protection systems address the following main issues that are usually required in such environment:
- Localize the protection switching
- High reliability
- Fast switching to protection (few msec)
- Continuous monitoring of both working and protection modules
- Reconfiguration of protected equipment as needed
- Compatible with external real-time control and indications
- 1:n protection, for cost and space savings
Lynx solutions provide a variety of protection methods to address any specific application in the most cost-effective way. These include:
- 1+1 protection for unidirectional protection operation
- 1:1 protection for bi-directional protection operation
- 1:n protection for bi-directional protection operation (for cost and space optimization)
