Fiber Security Solutions - Overview
Fiber optic networks are increasingly vulnerable to tapping and intrusion—including corporate or government eavesdropping, espionage, and potential terrorist activities.
In contrast to what operators sometimes assume, fibers are easy to tap. A commercially available clamp-on device is all the equipment needed for a simple but successful tap. The clamp is attached to a live fiber, bending it and collecting the emitted light via the bend. Once tapped, all voice, video and data communications are available to the intruder.
In some cases the traffic is not only sensitive but also critical and since network equipment cannot detect most types of optical taps, an effective means of protection switching is required . Protection switching is used to detect taps, prevent eavesdropping, protect the traffic and notify the network operator of an intruder and is essential for the security of any optical network.
