RoHS FAQ
Q. What is RoHS, and how does it impact Lynx’s products?

A. RoHS stands for Restriction of Hazardous Substances, and is a Directive, which was set into law by the European Union in January 2003. This Directive limits the use of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), hexavalent chromium (Cr 6+),
polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) in many types of electrical and electronic equipment. This includes telecom equipment, but gives some specific exemptions, for network infrastructure equipment. All products sold into Europe after July 1, 2006 must be compliant to the RoHS Directive. If product is found to violate the Directive, heavy monetary penalties can be incurred.

Q. What is a “6 of 6” and “5 of 5” RoHS Compliance?

A. “6 of 6” generally referred to as “RoHS Fully Compliant”. These are products or components that do not exceed any of the 6 restricted substances.
All Lynx Photonic Networks’ LightLEADER 4000™ product family shipped into the EU after July 1, 2006 are RoHS Fully Compliant (“6 of 6”)

“5 of 6” generally referred to as “RoHS Compliant with Exemption(s)”. These are products or components that will meet the requirement of removing all the restricted substances with the exception of the use of Lead (Pb). The RoHS directive includes specific “industry” and/or “product” exemptions for leadÍž examples include the “Pbinsolder for telecom network infrastructure products”, “Pb in compliant pin connectors”, and “Pb used in flip chip attach bumps for flip chip in package ball grid arrays (BGA’s)”.

Q. What makes a Lynx’s LightLEADER 4000 product family RoHS compliant?

A. A product is compliant if the homogeneous materials of all of the individual parts making up the product (as shipped, including packaging) do not contain any of the six banned substances above, as stated in the Directive.

Q. What is the difference between WEEE and RoHS?

A. WEEE stands for Waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment and is also an EU law but it concerns the proper disposal of all electrical components after their useful life. RoHS is an importation restriction into the EU and WEEE is concerned with proper disposal of the equipment. Like RoHS, laws similar to the EU's WEEE regulations are being evaluated in many countries. This set of regulations primarily involves product documentation and literature on proper disposal procedures.

All Lynx’s products that are RoHS compliant are WEEE compliant as well.

Q. Does the RoHS Directive only apply to products sold into the European Union?

A. Yes, however a number of other countries are working towards adopting similar legislative mandates. Lynx anticipates that environmental legislation will eventually impact more regions into which our products are sold.
